How companies can keep their workers safe

Employers in New Jersey and throughout the country should strive to ensure that their employees are protected from workplace hazards. Hazards could include poor air quality, exposure to toxic materials and injuries caused by repetitive motion. Individuals who are going to be working in an environment where dust, asbestos and other pollutants are present should be given access to protective equipment. Employers should also ensure that adequate ventilation systems are put in place to remove pollutants from the air.

Those who work in an office could be at risk for headaches, fatigue and other health issues caused by a sick building. Buildings are considered to be sick if more than 20% of occupants experience these or other symptoms. To remedy the issue, it may be a good idea to check for signs of mold or pollen. If these contaminants are present, employers should take steps to eliminate them.

Workers who forced to sit in odd positions during the day are likely to experience lower back problems. They could also develop pain in their hands or other joints that are used frequently each day. Musculoskeletal disorders, or MSDs, are among the most common reasons why workers either miss work or are unable to work to their full potential according to OSHA. To help avoid MSDs, employers should provide chairs and other tools that can be adjusted and that provide ample back support.

Individuals who experience carpal tunnel syndrome or other injuries at work may be entitled to temporary or permanent workers’ compensation benefits. This may allow them to pay medical bills and recoup lost wages related to a workplace injury or illness. An attorney may help individuals file a claim or deal with any issues caused by an employer or insurance company after filing such a claim.
