How does drowsy driving cause crashes?

On Behalf of | Nov 19, 2019 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

New Jersey residents like you may have heard of the phenomenon of drowsy driving. This behavior, though dangerous, is unfortunately somewhat common. Many drivers may be engaging in drowsy driving without even realizing how dangerous it is. But drowsy driving does not come without its risks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention take a look at how drowsy driving contributes to car crashes. It is not talked about quite as frequently as drunk driving or distracted driving, which get brought up often when talk turns to dangerous driving behaviors. However, it can be just as – if not more – dangerous than both of these things.

This is because drowsy driving actually has a similar effect on people as driving distracted or under the influence. A drowsy driver does not have good reflexes. They are unable to act quickly. They aren’t able to anticipate dangers as well, nor do they react to them in a fast and efficient manner. Some may become confused, or even express aggressive driving behaviors they wouldn’t otherwise show.

Of course, the biggest risk a drowsy driver faces is that of falling asleep at the wheel. This takes your hands, eyes and mind entirely off of the road. You are completely incapable of reacting to your surroundings. This increases the chance of getting into a crash by a good deal, and these crashes will likely be more dangerous as well, since you will not be awake to brake or try mitigating the damage. These are just a few of the reasons why drowsy driving can cause crashes, and why it is so dangerous.
