What age group is most at risk for falls?

On Behalf of | Sep 26, 2024 | Slip-and-Fall Accidents

Falls are a common cause of injuries, but not everyone is equally at risk. Some age groups face a higher likelihood of falling and experiencing serious consequences as a result. By understanding which groups are most vulnerable, individuals and property owners can take important preventative measures.

Older adults

The age group most at risk for falls is older adults, particularly those over 65. Balance, strength, and vision often decline as people age, increasing the chances of slipping and tripping. Falls in this group are more likely to result in serious injuries. Possible injuries may include fractures or head trauma. Older adults must stay aware of their surroundings and caregivers need to ensure the appropriate safety measures are in place.

Children

Children, particularly those under five years old, are also at a higher risk for falls. Children are still developing coordination and balance, making them more prone to accidents. Falls from playground equipment, stairs, or uneven surfaces are especially common.

While most falls in children result in minor injuries, some can be serious, especially if they involve a significant height or impact. Proper supervision and safety precautions can help reduce the risk.

Middle-aged adults

Though falls are less frequent among middle-aged adults, they are not immune. Factors such as poor footwear, wet floors, or uneven surfaces can lead to accidents. Adults in high-risk professions, such as construction, may face increased risks on the job.

Recognizing and preventing falls

Different life stages require specific precautions. Every age group needs to maintain a safe living environment. By recognizing these risks, individuals and communities can work together to minimize the potential for slip and fall accidents and serious injuries.
