Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians in New Jersey are facing a troubling rise in traffic-related fatalities. In 2024, 607 people lost their lives on New Jersey roads, compared to 606 in 2023. This alarming trend serves as a stark reminder of the persistent dangers on our roads for everyone.
The rising toll on drivers
Drivers in New Jersey face significant risks on the road. According to recent data, 379 drivers lost their lives in car accidents in 2022. This number dropped to 319 in 2023, giving hope for a safer future. However, 2024 saw a disturbing increase, with 355 driver deaths.
Many factors contribute to these tragedies, including distracted driving, speeding and driving under the influence. The age group most affected is 50-64 years old, with 70 driver fatalities in 2024 alone.
Cyclists in danger
Cycling has become more popular in New Jersey but also has increased risks. In 2022, 16 cyclists died on our roads. This number jumped to 27 in 2023, showing a worrying trend. While there was a slight decrease to 25 deaths in 2024, the danger remains high for cyclists. Lack of proper bike lanes, distracted drivers and poor visibility are some of the reasons behind these accidents.
Pedestrians at risk
Perhaps the most alarming trend is the rise in pedestrian deaths. After a decrease from 191 deaths in 2022 to 171 in 2023, pedestrian fatalities skyrocketed to 227 in 2024. This represents a significant increase in danger for those walking on New Jersey streets. Older adults are particularly at risk, with 61 pedestrians aged 65-79 losing their lives in 2024. Factors like distracted driving, poor street lighting, and lack of safe crossings contribute to this crisis.
In cases of accidents, seeking legal help can be crucial. A knowledgeable attorney can help victims and their families navigate insurance claims and seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and other damages. Legal expertise is especially valuable in complex cases involving multiple parties or unclear liability.
New Jersey’s roads should be safe for everyone – drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. By raising awareness, acting in our communities and supporting safer road policies, we can work towards reducing these tragic accidents and saving lives.
