Do you have an action plan in case of an accident?

Nobody ever wants to anticipate getting into an auto accident in New Jersey, but it is a smart idea to prepare yourself just in case it does happen. It is far better to be ready for a bad event than to have it happen and not know what to do. Preparing for an auto accident means knowing the steps you should take and having an emergency kit handy.

There is a lot of advice out there on the action steps after an accident, but most agree on a few standard points. Start with the other vehicle and driver. Get his or her name and contact information, gather insurance information as well. You also want to document the accident scene. Take pictures if possible. Finally, note witnesses and get their contact information.

It is also important to report the accident right away. You want to call law enforcement right away. If there are any injuries, you will probably have to wait at the scene until an officer gets there. However, you should never leave until law enforcement tells you that you can do so. You could face charges for leaving without permission.

Lastly, you should have an emergency kit in your vehicle. Accidents can happen anytime and anywhere. Be ready for anything. Have road flares and warning cones to help alert others on the road to the accident. Make sure you have a first aid kit, water and blankets. You should also have a flashlight. Add anything to your kit that could help you stay safe after an accident.
